I always though you were supposed to use steel for coil cores because magnetism likes steel and you can get a stronger magnetic field.

It appears we’ve been told a story here because when you put a hollow steel tube as the core the coil performs a lot better.

You can also use a hollow steel rectangular section.

And it works even better when you make a cut down the tub so it is not continuously round.
