Tidal Energy On Canada’s West Coast Moving Forward

Barging Ahead Is Water Wall Turbine Inc. Who Have Completed The Engineering On Their Floating Platform.

The catamaran style barge was designed by  ER Yacht Design, (28m LOA and 17m Beam),The company claims that this is the first of its kind in the World and it could potentially launch a new alternative method of low-cost, tidal energy generation for coastal communities.

The design had to meet several challenges ER yacht chairman Ivan Erdevicki said:

“the main and biggest challenge of the barge design was to ensure a high degree of stability, which was achieved by multiple ballast tanks that allow the vessel to meet the requirement for minimal movement despite the constantly changing flow of tides and water velocity. The ballast tanks in each hull regulate stability and optimize flotation for the maximum turbine efficiency”. Furthermore, the structural integrity of the barge is imperative considering that the water turbine alone weighs just over 80 tonnes!

This barge, a 500 kilowatt  design will be first deployed in the Dent Island Tidal Power Generation project It is Water Wall Turbine Inc’s. idea, a Canadian company focused on developing renewable energy generation technology from marine and fresh water currents. Each barge could carry a generating unit of up to 4 MW and can be moored in any waters over 4 to 5 meters in depth. The life expectancy of these units is 25 to 40 years.

The Dent Island Fishing Lodge is currently running diesel generators costing .65 per kilowatt hour. Water Wall Turbine Inc Is estimating they can produce power at 15 to 20 cents per kilowatt hour.

The system will be integrated with a battery storage technology developed by the Tesla Motors.

The barge is expected to be built in 3 months and then another 2 or 3 months to install the generating equipment.
